What is an interlock device?

This is a device that is installed in your vehicle that prohibits you from using the vehicle if it detects alcohol. You have to blow into the device before starting your vehicle and occasionally while driving it.

How do I know if I need an interlock?

You refused a blood or breath test: If you refused a blood or breath test, you will need an interlock for two years. 
You took a blood or breath test: If your BAC was at .149 or below, you will need it for at least 4 months. If your BAC was .15 or above, you will need it for 2 years.
You have been convicted of 3 “qualifying offenses” (DUI/DWAI/DUR/Reckless Driving/Veh. Assault/Veh. Homicide) in the past 7 years

Do I need an interlock on all my vehicles?

Yes, on every vehicle you own.

What happens if it detects alcohol?

Your car won’t start or run. But if you have 3 triggering “BAC Events” in any 12 consecutive months, you will have to have your interlock for up to another 12 months after the expiration of your current interlock restriction. 1 CCR 204-30.
 

How often do I need my interlock serviced?

Every 60 days.

Where do I get an interlock device?

The following vendors are approved: Smart Start / LifeSafer of CO / Intoxalock / Guardian
 

How much is an interlock?

Some vendors offer free installation + $75-120/month fees. Usually, the service is included in the lease price. You can apply for Ignition Interlock Financial Assistance if you cannot afford the full monthly costs.
